2011 Ford Mustang v6 Engine (video)

Ford
will be using a new, all-aluminum V6 engine for the base Ford Mustang, the company announced today.  The engine is not only more powerful than the previous unit, but should also provide better fuel economy.
The company will use a 3.7-liter, 24-valve Duratec engine that produces 305-horsepower and up to 380 ft-lb of torque.  This is a huge power improvement over the 210-hp 4.0-liter V6 used on the 2010 model year, despite the current unit having a larger displacement.

"This overlap control via Ti-VCT helps us eliminate compromises in the induction and exhaust systems," said Jim Mazuchowski, Ford manager of V-6 powertrain operations. "Drivers are going to notice improved low-speed torque and increased fuel economy and peak horsepower. Plus, there are benefits they won't notice, too, such as reduced emissions overall, especially at part-throttle."

The flexibility allowed by Ti-VCT means Mustang V-6 customers will experience:
-Better off-the-line launch feel, with plenty of the low-end "grunt" for which Mustang is famous. Ti-VCT can deliver up to a 5 percent improvement in low-end torque and a 7 percent improvement in peak power versus non-Ti-VCT-equipped engines.
-Improved fuel economy at all engine speeds resulting in projected 19 mpg city/30 highway with six-speed automatic transmission; 18 mpg city/29 highway with six-speed manual transmission. Ti-VCT alone can account for up to a 4.5 percent fuel economy improvement over non VCT engines.
-Lower emissions, with better control of NOx and HC throughout the range of engine operating speeds, reducing atmospheric pollution.

How the technology works
As a DOHC design, the 3.7-liter V-6 uses two camshafts per cylinder bank - one to open the intake valves and one to open the exhaust valves. Traditionally, camshafts only have been able to open the valves at a fixed point defined during engine design and manufacturing. But with modern variable cam timing systems, the camshafts can be rotated slightly relative to their initial position, allowing the cam timing to be "advanced" or "retarded."

Mustang V6 Performance Package

In an effort to promote the sporty nature of this new V6 Mustang, Ford will also offer customers the option of purchasing a high-performance package for their V6 Mustangs. The package, which will become available in August of 2010, includes the following:
  • A 3.31 rear axle ratio for quicker off-the-line acceleration
  • Firmer Mustang GT suspension
  • 19-inch wheels
  • Summer performance tires for improved grip
  • A strut tower brace for increased chassis rigidity
  • Unique electronic stability control calibration with sport mode for performance driving.

    Pricing and Build Details

The base V6 Mustang will cost you $22,995, while the well equipped V6 Premium will set you back $26,695. Ford says the 2011 V6 Mustang will be built at the Auto Alliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Mich. The new 3.7L V6 will be built at Ford’s recently retooled Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1.

2011 Ford Mustang sales off to a galloping good start

    2011 Ford Mustang GT

2009 was not a banner sales year for the Ford Mustang. Despite a complete makeover for the 2010 model year, sales of the usually successful pony car topped off at 66,623, an all time low. The Mustang still managed to beat out the Camaro in total sales for the year, but Ford sold fewer Mustangs for each month that the Camaro was actually on showroom floors.

Enter the 2011 Mustang. Apparently, a 305-horsepower V6 that gets 30 mpg and a 5.0-liter V8 putting out 412 horsepower does wonders for sales. Ford is reporting that three times more 2011 Mustangs have been ordered than 2010 models at this same time last year. In total, 11,000 Mustangs have been ordered since January.

Customers have been particularly taken with the V6 model, which makes up half of all the orders, and the California Special has also fared better than expected, tripling Ford's initial sales projections. Ford says that 41-percent of 2011 Mustang orders have been for the GT model, who will surely enjoy rollin'... in their five-point-ohs, and the remaining nine percent have been for GT500s. Hit the jump for the full press release from Ford.

2011 Ford Mustang 4 door sedan Preview

    ford mustang 4 door sedan
    Ford Mustang 4

At the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, Ford will unveil a four-door, rear-wheel-drive concept car. The concept, known as "The Interceptor", is based on the Mustang’s rear-wheel-drive architecture and will be a preview of the Ford Mustang sedan that will go on sale starting 2011.
We know that Ford denied that a Mustang Sedan version will ever be made, but if the Concept that will be presented in Detroit will use the Mustang’s RWD architecture the car will see the production for sure. First because the Mustang’s platform will keep the price acceptable and secondly because we believe Ford really needs this model in its line-up; for example Dodge and Chrysler have models on 4-dour market that sells very well and until now Ford does not have any competition on this segment of 4-door sport. So if they want to compete on this segment of the market a Mustang Sedan is a must. Although we are not sure if the model will go on sale under the "Mustang" name, but it will go on sale as a competitor for Chrysler 300C SRT8 and Dodge Charger RT.

    Ford Mustang 4
The model will have a modern shape with the design insipred by the Giugiaro Mustang Concept that was presented at Los Angeles Auto Show. So it is very posible that the Mustang sedan to have the same dimenssions as the Giugiaro: 30 millimeters added to the front, gradually expanding the width by a full 80 millimeters toward the rear. The detailed look will have a clear modernization: the retro-look dominating so far is taken clearly back and the futuristic Design yields.
The new model will be powered by a range of V6 and V8 engines. Standard will be the same 4.0 liter V6 engine that powers Mustang Coupe delivering arround 200 hp. Another option will be powered by a 4.6 liter V8 engine with an output of 280 hp. Also a more powerful version is also expected, with an output arround 400 hp.
Ford will also try to increase the gas mileage in its entire line-up. It will implement a displacement on demand system, (similar to that which GM is currently running), in which 4 cylinders shut-off for highway cruising, and all eight are activated when the throttle is pressed.

    Ford Mustang 4
The chassis will remain the same for the Mustang Sedan, similar to how the 1994-1998 models shared the same core chassis as the 1999-2006s, yet they still managed to look a good amount different. Also the sedan will have the same five speed manual and five speed automatic transmission as the current Coupe.
The 2011 Mustang Sedan will attempt to incorporate a futuristic look and still maintaining the classic Mustang look.
