Illustrated: 2012 Ford Mondeo four-door coupe

On Monday, we brought you rumors about the 2012 Ford Mondeo four-door coupe, which will purportedly rival the Volkswagen CC and other similar vehicles. So, what would this CLS-inspired Ford look like? Have a look at our artist’s speculative illustration for a pretty good idea of what to expect.

The regular sedan is due for a mild facelift in 2010, but the newest reports from the U.K. indicate the completely revamped 2012 Mondeo will be available in a four-door coupe body style in addition to more traditional formats.
Unique features to the new body style are expected to include frameless side windows, vertical air vents behind the front wheels, finned C-pillars, clear tail lights, four individually adjustable seats as well as a new black panel MMI touchscreen interface.

Feature-wise, the higher price of entry will include goodies such as active steering working with a lane departure system, adaptive cruise control that can recognize speed limits and a stop-and-go mode meant to reduce idling and emissions. A keyless entry system is said to recognize the driver and adjust cockpit interfaces accordingly, a parking assist system and optional engines with AdBlue diesel technology or a mild hybrid version that uses a starter-generator, brake regeneration and buffer battery.
Ford’s European kinetic design theme will remain on the 2012 model, but the all-new Mondeo will feature a sleek roofline, a trapezoidal grille, drawn-back front headlights and a short decklid.

The next-generation Mondeo will still ride on its current platform, but alterations will be made to the car’s track, length and wheelbase.
The 2012 Mondeo range could even grow to include a two-door coupe (perhaps marking the return of the Capri badge) and a crossover.
There are currently no plans to bring the next Mondeo to the U.S., but Ford has already announced that three European models will be making the trek across the Atlantic, so it still remains a possibility. Here’s hoping.
