Modifications to both the street and racing versions included: side-exiting exhausts, Shelby 15 in (380 mm) magnesium wheels (though some early cars were fitted with the factory steel wheels), fiberglass hoods with functional scoops, relocated front control arms, (to reduce understeer and neutralize handling), quicker steering, Koni shock absorbers, a Detroit Locker rear end with Ford Galaxie drum brakes, metallic brake linings at all four corners, rear-mounted batteries, rear anti-sway bars with souped-up front anti-sway bar, dash-mounted gauges, a fiberglass parcel shelf and spare tire holder where the rear seat was intended to be. Among other engine modifications, considerable overhaul boosted output to 306 hp (228 kW). Hot Rod Magazine recorded a 0-60 time of 5.7 seconds.
When Ford stiffened the car's basic body structure, they included a front angled brace intended for the export models and so-called "Monte Carlo" bar; triangulating the under-hood shock absorber towers. Though Shelby's influence on the car diminished as Ford's grew, the 1965 to 1970 GT-350 and its "big-block" brother, the 1967 to 1970 GT-500 are among the most sought-after, and valued automobiles in the world; so too are the high-performance models offered over the years by other automotive tuners following in Shelby's footsteps.
Carroll Shelby also had a special GT500 in mind, called the Super Snake. Instead of the 428, the Super Snake got an all aluminum version of the upgraded side-oiler FE motor in the 427 S/C Shelby Cobra, estimated at around 600 horsepower. Unfortunately, the staggering sticker price offset the public's interest in this concept, and only one was ever documented, with that one still in existence today.

Engineering
Surprisingly, for all its style and well-marketed sporty design, the Mustang was based heavily on familiar, yet simple components. Much of the chassis, suspension, and drive train was derived from the Ford Falcon and Ford Fairlane. The car had a unitized platform-type frame from the 1964 Falcon, and welcoming box-section side rails, including five welded crossmembers. Although hardtop Mustangs were the majority in sales, durability problems with the new frame led to the unusual step of engineering the (necessarily less rigid) convertible first, which ensured adequate stiffness. Overall length of the Mustang and Falcon was identical, at 181.6 in (4613 mm), although the Mustang's wheelbase at 108 in (2743 mm) was slightly shorter. With an overall width of 68.2 in (1732 mm), it was 3.4 in (86 mm) narrower, although wheel track was nearly identical. Shipping weight, about 2570 lb (1170 kg) with six-cylinder engine, was also similar. A full-equipped, V8 model weighed about 3000 lb (1360 kg).

The industry reacts
In its first two years of production, three Ford Motor Company plants in San Jose, California; Dearborn, Michigan; and Metuchen, New Jersey produced nearly 1.5 million Mustangs, a record unequalled before or since. It was a success that left General Motors utterly unprepared and the Chrysler Corporation only slightly less so. Chrysler had just introduced a car only a few weeks before that would be a competitor, the Plymouth Barracuda. Though the "'Cuda" would grow into one of the most revered muscle cars of all time, it started out at as just a Plymouth Valiant with a hastily grafted fastback rear window. As for GM, they were certain that they had a Mustang fighter in their rear-engine Corvair Monza, but sales figures didn't even come close. The Monza was a fine performer, but boasted a six-cylinder, not competing to the Mustang's available eight-cylinder. It took GM until the 1967 model year to counter with the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. Even Lincoln-Mercury joined the fray in 1967 with the introduction of an "upmarket Mustang" (and subsequent Motor Trend Car of the Year), the Mercury Cougar. The Cougar name had originally been given to the Mustang during the development phase. In 1968 American Motors (AMC) would introduce the Javelin and later, the 2-seat high-performance AMX. This genre of small, sporty, and often powerful automobiles was unofficially dubbed the "pony car" as a tribute to the car that started it all. The 1968 Mustang fastback gained pop culture status when it was used to great effect as Steve McQueen's car of choice in the crime thriller Bullitt. The Mustang was pitted against the Dodge Charger in the film's famous car chase through the streets of San Francisco. The Mustang also got a boost in its already high-performance image when Holman-Moody racing ordered 15 1966 Mustangs for use in the A/FX drag racing class. These Mustangs were turned into brutes, thanks to the incredible 427 Single-overhead-cam Hemi-headed V-8. Seriously underrated at 657 horsepower with 2-4bbls, these motors were absolute screamers, redlining at over 10000 rpm. Drivers routinely made passes in the mid-10's, with trap speeds around 130-135 mph, not too shabby considering the pathetic traction that slicks of the day provided, not to mention the mustang's aerodynamics (or rather, lack thereof).

The Mustang grows up
The 1966 Mustang debuted with only moderate trim changes, and a few new options such as an automatic transmission for the "Hi-Po," a new interior and exterior colors, an AM/eight-track "Stereosonic" sound system, and one of the first AM/FM monaural radios available in any car. The 1967 model year would see the first of the Mustang's many major redesigns with the installation of big-block V8 engines in mind. The high-performance 289 option now took a supporting role on the option sheet behind a massive 335 hp 390 in³ (6.4 L) engine direct from the Thunderbird, which was equipped with a four-barrel carburetor. Stock 390/4speed equipped Mustangs of the day were recording ¼ mile times of mid 13's [1], with trap speeds of over 105 mph. A drag racer for the street took a stand during the middle of the 1968 model year, as the 428 Cobra Jet (7.0 L) officially rated at 335 hp (250 kW), but in reality producing well in excess of 400 hp. 1969 saw the introduction of both the car's third body style and a hand-built muscle car intended solely to satisfy the homologation rules of NASCAR, the Boss 429.

Available in 1969 and 1970 only, with a standard Mustang SportsRoof (the new corporate name for the fastback) and the new Mach 1 muscle car version's deluxe interior, the Boss 429 sported none of the garish decals and paint schemes of the day. Only a hood scoop and 15 in (380 mm) "Magnum 500" wheels fitted with Goodyear "Polyglas" tires, with a small "BOSS 429" decal on each front fender, hinted that most powerful Ford V8 of all time was fitted under the hood. Ford intentionally underrated the Boss 429 for advantages both in racing as well as insurability at 375 hp (280 kW) and 450 ft·lbf (610 N•m) of torque. Several dynos showed it to be more around 500-525 horsepower, at very high rpm however. Even with racing touches straight from the factory such as aluminum heads with hemispherical combustion chambers, along with a combination of O-rings and seals in place of head gaskets, it was believed that yet another 75 to 100 hp (50 to 75 kW) was on tap once the single four-barrel carburetor, intake, the restrictive factory exhaust system, and engine speed governor were either replaced or removed. While power steering was a "mandatory option" on the Boss 429, neither an automatic transmission nor air conditioning was available. In the case of the latter, there simply wasn't enough room under the hood. It should be noted that due to the extremely free breathing capabilities of these heads, combined with the smallish carburetor(the Boss 302 had a larger one) and restrictive exhaust, it wasn't necessarily the best choice for a street car, especially since the rev limiter was locking in its revving potential. The Boss 429 made its power in a significantly higher RPM range than most other big block street cars, much like the 426 street hemis, and of course street racing was prevalent in the day. Owners of these could often be surprised by "lesser" cars of the day in stop light drag racing.

Also available during that two-year period was another homologation special for the up-and-coming sport of Trans-American sedan racing. The Boss 302 was Ford's attempt to mix the power of a muscle car with the handling prowess of a sports car. The automotive press gushed over the result, deeming it the car "the GT-350 should have been." Boasting a graphic scheme penned by Ford designer Larry Shinoda, the "Baby Boss" was powered by an engine that was essentially a combination of the new-for-1968 302 in³ (4.9 L) V8 and topped with cylinder heads from the yet to be released new-for-1970 351 in³ (5.8 L) "Cleveland". This combination meant that the Boss 302 was good for a conservatively rated 290 hp (216 kW) through its four-speed manual transmission. Ford originally intended to call the car Trans Am, but Pontiac had beaten them to it, applying the name to a special version of the Firebird. In the ¼ mile the Boss 302 could post very similar times to the Boss 429, oddly enough, despite the smaller displacement and an incredibly free-breathing induction system in the car. It should be noted that the blocks from these cars are incredibly strong, and Ford Racing plans on selling new Boss 302 blocks in the near future.

Though many vehicles took a significant hit over the last couple of years, the Ford Fusion remained a strong seller. Its primary selling points? The Fusion has long featured an environmentally responsible design and it stands as one of the most economically viable choices on the market. Given its rousing success in 2010, few things changed with the 2011 Ford Fusion.

The basics

The 2011 Fusion is priced between $20,000 and $29,000 depending upon engine choice and selection of features. The standard Fusion offers 23 MPG in the city and up to 34 MPG on the highway. This can be boosted by choosing the hybrid version, which racks up 41 MPG out on the interstate. Engine choices for this vehicle include a juiced up four cylinder and two different V6 designs. The basic four cylinder sits at around 175 horsepower, and the wide selection of different powertrains makes this a highly versatile choice for mid-range shoppers.

How did it handle?

The 2011 version features standard four-wheel disc brakes, helping provide a high level of handling. Likewise, the vehicle is equipped with the Ford AdvanceTrac Antiskid system, making it more stable in those high pressure situations. Those Fusions with all-wheel drive capability have enhanced handling, as automatic power shifting helps the vehicle achieve its highest potential.

What’s under the hood?

Hiding under the hood are a most of different options. Many are disappointed that the Fusion is not equipped with the EcoBoost engine, but that is only a slight complaint given what is under the hood. The four cylinder is a popular choice, given its more than adequate 175 horsepower and its high end fuel economy. The SE and SEL models feature a 3 liter V6, which provides 240 horsepower. This compares favorably with other mid-size vehicles in class.
Sport models feature the larger 3.5 liter V6, which is capable of 270 horsepower. This model comes complete with an enhanced suspension system and a six-speed automatic transmission. The Sport obviously carries a higher price tag, but prospective auto buyers get a lot of bang for their buck in terms of power.

Interior features

Last year’s Ford Fusion made its name with the most advanced technological features on the market. It looks to nab that demographic once again, offering better sound and Ford’s interactive sync system. With a USB-enabled iPod docking station, real time traffic, weather, and news provisions, and automatic phone features, the 2011 Fusion will make sure that drivers always have the information that they need.
Two-toned leather seats make this a more stylish entry and the blind spot prevention features are next generation stuff. Overall, Ford seems to have put a ton of time and effort into the Fusion’s interior, and it’s paid off in big fashion.

What’s different?
The 2011 Fusion is more of the same from 2010, as Ford didn’t see much reason to change its design. It retains the sleek, sporty look and the engine specs are right in line with last year. The primary changes have come with interior technology, as Ford seeks to enhance the driver experience.

One complaint is the the EcoBoost engine design is not available, which would make this vehicle more environmentally friendly and more powerful overall. Likewise, it doesn’t have the “modern” look that many mid-size vehicles are taking on in 2011. Still, these are only minor complaints, and the positives far outweigh the negatives.

There's more to the significantly refreshed Edge than a controversial grille, but we imagine most consumers want to like the styling of what they drive. The 2011 Edge certainly has some new and attractive upscale touches, leading us to wonder whether there's enough space for the Lincoln MKX.

In front, the 2011 Edge has a giant chrome grille as well as restyled headlights and slim, vertical daytime running lights. A resculpted hood increases the impression of heft. Atop the Edge's front windshield, an antenna remains, as on the 2010 version.

Not much has changed from the side view apart from the addition of new wheel styles. Out back, the taillights have been restyled -- gone are the pre-refresh clear and red Edge taillights. On the inside, there's simply no comparison between the 2010 and 2011 Edge. The new model's combination of wood and silver trim plus touchscreen controls appears to be a vastly improved cabin in which to spend morning and evening commutes. The new Focus hatch and sedan are built on the newest iteration of Ford's global C-platform. Ford expects more than two million sales globally from C-platform cars by 2012.

Bearing the latest evolution of Ford's 'Kinetic' design language, Ford says the new Focus sedan and hatch models are "at the centre of convergence for automotive trends" (hmm... whatever that means).

At the front end, jelly bean-like headlights sit above a tall centre air dam flanked by sharply-angled side intakes, separate from the foglight housings.
A somewhat nondescript grille is joined by bonnet strakes that reach back to the windscreen glass, with a second line continuing up into the A-pillar.
Largely identical up to the rear passenger door, the profile of the Focus sedan and hatch features multiple character lines running together along the wheel arches, and through the top and bottom of the doors.

Prominent wheel arches create a connection between the outgoing Focus and this new generation.
At the rear is where the two Focus models diverge, the rear quarter window and taillights being the standout differences (apart from the obvious hatch/sedan factors).
The taillights of both models extend into the rear quarter quart panel, but in their own fashion. On the hatch, the fuel cap design is blended with the lines of the drivers side taillight, while on the sedan the traditional circle cap suffices.

Inside, the Kinetic styling continues, with design elements both unique to the new Focus and familiar to the new Fiesta.

Soft-touch materials, piano black and dark satin silver trim features throughout, joined by multi-function displays in the centre stack and the instrument cluster.
The new Focus offers a cockpit-style interior, with even the centre console angled slightly towards the driver.

Equipment and Features

Ford has yet to reveal full details on the Focus' feature set, but perhaps the most significant item is the new MyFord Touch control system.
In the US, the Focus was the first model to feature Ford's SYNC infotainment system, and the new Focus will be among the first to offer the MyFord Touch control system, including a new eight-inch display in the centre console.
A multi-function display rests between the rev meter and speedometer, providing information on average fuel consumption, distance to empty, trip computer and other details.
High-strength steels feature extensively throughout the Focus' shell, comprising 55 percent of the body's construction. More than 26 percent of the body's steel is made up of ultra-high-strength and Boron steels.
According to Ford, these advanced materials make the new Focus one of the safest cars in the world, while minimising overall weight.

Mechanical Package

The global powertrain line-up for the new Focus will include a range of EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo-charged direct injection engines, including a 1.6 litre petrol engine and improved Duratorq TDCi common-rail diesel engines, improving fuel economy by 10 to 20 percent compared to current models.
Ford is set to show a brand new 2.0 litre petrol engine at Detroit this week, featuring direct injection and and Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT).
Ford says its new 2.0 litre DI Ti-VCT engine is up to 20 percent more powerful than its current 2.0 litre Duratec inline-four, while contributing to a fuel economy improved by more than 10 percent.
The new 2.0 litre DI Ti-VCT engine will be paired with Ford's new dry-clutch six-speed PowerShift automatic transmission, featuring an advanced dual-clutch design designed to help reduce fuel consumption by up to 9 percent compared to a traditional four-speed automatic.
Unlike conventional automatics, the dry-clutch PowerShift transmission, based on more efficient manual gearbox technology, is not hampered by the extra weight and complexity of torque converters, planetary gears and oil pumps.
Ford's engineers have developed new optimised designs for the Focus' 'Control Blade' multilink rear suspension, along with the semi-isolated front and rear subframes.
A new Electric Power Assist Steering system features in the new Focus, which Ford says has been tuned to provide "pure and precise" responses at high speed, remaining light and manoeuvrable for parking.
Developed by Ford of Europe, a new Dynamic Cornering Control system transfers power between the drive wheels to reduce understeer, as well as improve traction and turn-in.

Before detailing what makes our $50,145 tester Titanium-worthy ($49,370 plus $775 delivery), it's important to recap what we already know about Ford's boxy three-row crossover. When the Flex first arrived in dealerships back in 2008, we said it has "the technology customers crave, its interior is world-class and it turns heads everywhere it goes." Those attributes still apply to the Flex more than two years later, and the addition of an optional 355-horsepower EcoBoost V6 has only bolstered the status of this unique crossover

So how does the Titanium trim level improve upon the already distinctly styled Flex? Dearborn designers have differentiated it with several standard features that aren't available anywhere else in the Flex lineup. On the outside, Titanium Flexes get a Tuxedo Black Metallic roof (lesser models make do with body-color or white lids) accented by black chrome and alloy metallic accents. When contrasted against the White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat paint on our tester, the razor-sharp all-black greenhouse really pops. Our favorite exterior feature, however, is the black chrome liftgate applique that tells the world this is no run-of-the-mill Flex. Other Titanium-specific trim features include sinister smoked head- and taillight fixtures, a gunmetal gray front grille and eye-catching 20-inch alloys wrapped with 255/45R20 rubber. If there were one Titanium feature we would uncheck if we could, it'd be the bold, capitalized "FLEX" badging affixed to the leading edge of the hood.

The exterior of the Flex carries considerable presence, but the big crossover shines brightest with a warm and inviting cabin that delivers a near-luxury driving environment. Our tester came with standard navigation, SYNC, an uplevel Sony sound system and massive Vista moonroof spanning all three rows. Remember the aforementioned options that come with the dreaded asterisk? The despicable star presents itself when opting for the $795 second row refrigerator, which also requires shelling out $750 for second-row bucket seats and another $100 for a floor console, bringing the total tab for refrigerated cans of Coke to $1,645. The comfort of the second row captain's chairs is first rate, but we're not sold on the costly fridge, which only holds six or seven cans of soda.

It's also disappointing that MyFord Touch has not yet migrated to the Flex as an option. We tested this Flex Titanium only a few weeks after driving a MyFord Touch-equipped Edge Limited, and Ford's new user interface coupled with multiple LCD screens makes the center console of the Flex look antiquated. As the Titanium model isn't part of a full-line overhaul, this oversight isn't surprising and will be no doubt remedied when Ford performs a mid-cycle refresh on the entire Flex range.

Navigation, SYNC and the Vista roof are all standard in Limited models, but the Titanium trim adds charcoal leather seats with three rows of Alcantara inserts. The suede-like additions are both tasteful and feel fantastic to the touch. They're the single best reason to spend $2,500 above and beyond the Limited. Occupants are also greeted with illuminated skid plates, unique door inserts and metallic accents on the center stack. For the driver, the the most important feature unique to the Titanium is the fat, perforated leather steering wheel rim that wouldn't look out of place in a $100,000 German luxury crossover.

Speaking of features that are typically only available on high-dollar people haulers, our tester came with Ford's 355-horsepower, twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6. Opting for the EcoBoost engine brings with it all-wheel drive as standard equipment – something of a necessity given the engine's substantial torque reserves (350 pound-feet from just 1,500 rpm). Augmenting the powertrain with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost means the Titanium's already substantial base price rises from $40,340 to $45,185. With such a large vehicle that's also all-wheel drive, this Flex's fuel economy lays low at 16 miles per gallon in the city and 21 mpg on the highway – hardly deserving of being branded "Eco-" anything, but a similarly powerful V8 engine would be even less efficient.

Then again, we tend not to worry about consumption when brandishing 355 horsepower, and if you're going to spend this much money on a crossover, you should reward yourself with the best powertrain available. The fuel economy really wasn't as bad as we thought, either, as we managed a respectable (for such a big, heavy vehicle) 19.1 mpg during a week of driving.

Another thing I hate about traveling on the freeway, beside the traffic jam, is the cabin noise within my 2003 Honda Accord (about 70 dB at 65 mph). A long afternoon ride from a hard day at work requires a moment of quietness. Maybe, I may have to trade in my car for the new 2011 Ford Fiesta. Ford engineers not only designed a fuel efficient car but also achieved low cabin noise as well.

Ford engineers measured the noise level in inside the 2011 Ford Fiesta in a wind tunnel at 80 mph on the highway. Launched this past June, the Kuga is a compact, five-seat crossover designed by Englishman Martin Smith, who left General Motors to join Ford in early 2004. He and his team created an aerodynamic yet extroverted skin, which is accentuated by available wheels as large as nineteen inches. Stylish and fashionable, the new crossover from Ford of Europe is about the same length as a Ford Escape, but it sits astride a 2.8-inch-longer wheelbase.

The long stretch between the axles helps provide a commendably roomy cabin, although the stubby rear end encloses a rather small cargo hold (maximum capacity is 47.9 cubic feet). For passengers, there’s plenty of cabin space, first-rate ergonomics, and premium-feeling materials. The rather uncomfortable and unsupportive seats are the only letdown. Ford offers a host of deluxe extras, including a large glass sunroof, keyless ignition, a heated windshield, dual-zone air-conditioning, and a backup camera.

It’s a solid, driver-oriented platform that blends inspiring handling with good ride comfort. The car-based Kuga is free of fun-killers like excessive body roll, sloppy steering, spongy brakes, and terminal understeer. Instead, it invites you to explore its strengths, such as sure-footed roadholding, energetic grip, and excellent all-wheel-drive traction, which makes all the difference on slippery blacktop and through tight corners. At more than 3500 pounds in AWD guise, the Kuga is no featherweight, but it nonetheless covers ground with enthusiasm and effortlessness. In Europe, Ford offers only one engine in the Kuga, a 136-hp, 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder that pumps out 236 lb-ft of torque. The diesel is incredibly frugal, achieving 37 mpg in the European test cycle in both front- and all-wheel-drive models, giving the Kuga a range of some 550 miles. Its acceleration, however, is not exactly rocketlike (0 to 62 mph in 10.7 seconds), and it runs out of steam at 113 mph. The Kuga comes equipped exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission-no automatic is available. However, a second engine choice-a 2.5-liter, 200-hp, gasoline-burning five-cylinder-due later this year, will offer both manual and automatic transmissions. When the U.S. model goes into production, Ford likely will add a 145-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder, also gasoline-powered. A mild hybrid may follow suit, but Ford is still mum on the timing. Another possibility is a stretched seven-seat Kuga that would feature an extended wheelbase and a longer rear overhang.

Ford will be using a new, all-aluminum V6 engine for the base Ford Mustang, the company announced today. The engine is not only more powerful than the previous unit, but should also provide better fuel economy.
The company will use a 3.7-liter, 24-valve Duratec engine that produces 305-horsepower and up to 380 ft-lb of torque. This is a huge power improvement over the 210-hp 4.0-liter V6 used on the 2010 model year, despite the current unit having a larger displacement.

"This overlap control via Ti-VCT helps us eliminate compromises in the induction and exhaust systems," said Jim Mazuchowski, Ford manager of V-6 powertrain operations. "Drivers are going to notice improved low-speed torque and increased fuel economy and peak horsepower. Plus, there are benefits they won't notice, too, such as reduced emissions overall, especially at part-throttle."

The flexibility allowed by Ti-VCT means Mustang V-6 customers will experience:
-Better off-the-line launch feel, with plenty of the low-end "grunt" for which Mustang is famous. Ti-VCT can deliver up to a 5 percent improvement in low-end torque and a 7 percent improvement in peak power versus non-Ti-VCT-equipped engines.
-Improved fuel economy at all engine speeds resulting in projected 19 mpg city/30 highway with six-speed automatic transmission; 18 mpg city/29 highway with six-speed manual transmission. Ti-VCT alone can account for up to a 4.5 percent fuel economy improvement over non VCT engines.
-Lower emissions, with better control of NOx and HC throughout the range of engine operating speeds, reducing atmospheric pollution.

How the technology works
As a DOHC design, the 3.7-liter V-6 uses two camshafts per cylinder bank - one to open the intake valves and one to open the exhaust valves. Traditionally, camshafts only have been able to open the valves at a fixed point defined during engine design and manufacturing. But with modern variable cam timing systems, the camshafts can be rotated slightly relative to their initial position, allowing the cam timing to be "advanced" or "retarded."

In an effort to promote the sporty nature of this new V6 Mustang, Ford will also offer customers the option of purchasing a high-performance package for their V6 Mustangs. The package, which will become available in August of 2010, includes the following:

No matter how good the Shelby GT500 has looked on paper, the car has always fallen short in reality, not unlike LeBron and the Cavs. Part of the reason could be its live rear axle, a component junked by virtually every carmaker decades ago, and rightly so—it’s awfully hard to get a car to handle and ride optimally without an independent rear suspension.

But more important, perhaps, is that the supercharged truck engine stuffed under the GT500’s hood added weight to the front end of a car that was already nose heavy. The last Shelby we tested was more than 300 pounds heavier than a GT, and almost all of those extra pounds were over the front axle. Much as we enjoyed the 2007 to 2010 Shelbys, we didn’t like the way they overworked their brakes or understeered. They liked entering corners about as much as a pig enjoys being measured for an open pit. Plus, their engines suffered from heat soak during track work and wouldn’t produce full power during lapping sessions.
About a year ago, a couple of Ford insiders told us that a fix was in the works for the Shelby’s recalcitrant behavior. “A lighter engine,” they murmured. When the 2011 Shelby GT500 was revealed at the Chicago auto show earlier this year, Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief nameplate engineer, and Hermann Salenbauch, director of advanced product creation and global performance vehicles, took us over to the car on the show floor and proudly lifted the hood. There, nestled in the engine bay, was an aluminum-block 5.4-liter V-8, topped by a Roots-type blower.

The engine is essentially a wet-sump evolution of the Ford GT’s (which was itself a dry-sump evolution of the SVT Mustang’s). The aluminum block is different, however: It features six-bolt, billet main bearing caps and Ford’s first use of “plasma transferred wire arc” liner coatings on the cylinder bores, which adds enough strength to get around using cast-iron liners and sounds awfully similar to what Mercedes-Benz started doing five years ago on its 6.2-liter AMG V-8. The GT500’s engine retains the same 90.2-millimeter bore and 105.8-mm stroke of the iron-block engine, as well as the 8.4:1 compression ratio. A larger, two-row intercooler is said to have 40 percent more cooling capacity than the single-row unit it replaces.
The new engine makes 550 horsepower at 6200 rpm, an improvement of 10 horses over the 2010 GT500. Peak torque remains unchanged at 510 pound-feet, but it’s delivered 250 revs lower, at 4250 rpm. Most important, the new engine shaves 102 pounds off the iron-block V-8’s weight.
Otherwise, the base 2011 GT500 is relatively unchanged compared with the 2010 model, except that it gets electric power assist for the steering instead of hydraulic boosting; even the spring rates are unchanged, though the new car is lighter than the old. Inside and out, it remains virtually the same, except there’s now an optional glass roof, standard high-intensity discharge headlamps, and a programmable key.

Also newsworthy for 2011 is the availability of an SVT Performance package ($3495). It features Goodyear’s latest Eagle F1 Supercar rubber, the G:2. The P265/40 front and P285/35 back tires mount on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear forged aluminum wheels, each one inch larger than the base GT500’s.
To match the tires, Ford engineers increased the front spring rate by 20.5 percent and the rear by 9.5 percent, while lowering the ride height by 0.4 and 0.3 inch, respectively, compared with the base GT500’s. The engineers also modified the shock valving for stiffer damping and added a new front underbody-closeout panel and a shorter, 3.73:1 final-drive ratio. Externally, cars with the Performance package get narrower body stripes than the base GT500’s. Our test car came without stripes—they’re a delete option, and that would be our choice because the car still looks brawny but a bit more understated.
Thanks to the new engine, the electric power steering, and the lighter wheels, the car we drove tipped our scales at 3751 pounds, 146 less than the last GT500 we tested. More important, the amount of weight over the front wheels has gone from 57.4 percent to 55.7 percent. This less porky GT500 also gets better EPA gas mileage—up from 14 mpg city and 22 mpg highway to 15 and 23—making it the first GT500 to avoid a gas-guzzler penalty.
The combination of less weight, more power, better tires, and a revised suspension turns the Shelby into the car it always should have been. At the test track, we recorded 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, 0 to 100 in 9.1 seconds, and the standing quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds at 117 mph. Our last 2010 test car ran those sprints in 4.5, 9.6, and 12.7 seconds, respectively. The 70-to-0 braking took 151 feet, an improvement from 165. Grip came in at an impressive 1.00 g, with far less understeer than the last car’s 0.91-g effort. Those numbers are right up with a Corvette Grand Sport’s and better overall than the last BMW M3 we tested.
On the street, it’s now a much more coherent machine. The engine sounds sensational, with a malevolent snarl at high revs that’s enhanced by a muted whine from the supercharger. Power delivery is very linear, with meaningful thrust above 2000 rpm, and the shifter for the six-speed manual has short throws and a narrow gate with a positive, if somewhat notchy, action. Brake-pedal feel is superb and involving, but—despite being accurate and direct—the steering could use a little more weighting.

Still, this is the first GT500 that truly handles well. It turns in crisply and is satisfyingly neutral unless you take a 90-degree bend with the stability system turned off or the road is wet, in which case, the back end slides in a controllable manner that will impress your more juvenile friends. On dry roads, in third gear and beyond, the back end stays planted. Surprisingly, despite the antediluvian rear axle, it rides quite comfortably and isn’t upset by midcorner bumps.
The goodness doesn’t come cheap. The Shelby GT500’s base price is $49,495, which grew to $55,330 on our test vehicle with the addition of the SVT Performance package—a must-have in our minds—and the Electronics package (voice-activated navigation system, high-definition and satellite radio, and dual-zone electronic climate control). Fully loaded, the Shelby can reach $57,700, which is a lot of money for a Mustang.

Then again, the Shelby’s only real competition comes from within its own ranks. The Shelby positively slaughters rival pony cars from Chevy and Dodge. A Corvette is a sports car and not directly comparable, no matter how often we do so. And while an M3 lines up on price and performance, that car plays to a markedly different audience.
Lurking in the background is another Ford Mustang that’s almost as fast, handles just as well, and costs a comforting 20 grand less. Unless you’re a complete Mustang nut who has to have the biggest of the breed in the garage, a GT—particularly now, with the new 412-hp, 5.0-liter V-8—will give you most of what the Shelby offers. It’s a bit like the Cavs: Was it really a good idea to spend all that money to get Shaq?

It's not going to be easy to suasion truck buyers that they can have all the power, performance, and durability of a V-8 with just six cylinders, but that's th missionin front of Ford with its new 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine for the new F-150. Maybe you've seen the firsthire purchase of Ford's torture test campaign, rolled out as a multipart Internet short-form documentary with the "Dirty Jobs" guy, Mike Rowe, highlighting all the tests Ford put the new engine through in six months.

Ford completely revamped the F-150 powertrain lineup by offering four new engines, including a new all-aluminum 3.7-liter DOHC V-6, an all-aluminum 5.0-liter DOHC V-8, an all-new all-aluminum 3.5-liter EcoBoost direct-injection twin turbo DOHC V-6, and the 6.2-liter SOHC V-8 we've already seen in the Raptor and new Super Dutys. This new EcoBoost engine (also used in the SHO Taurus) is Ford's first application of the technology in a pickup truck, offering considerably better fuel economy numbers while holding onto maximum payload and towing numbers for the F-150 frame. It won't be an easy sell for loyal V-8 customers who are accustomed to the strength and durability of their favorite small-block half-tons. To counter their skepticism, Ford marketing gurus (no doubt after consulting with a few (engineers) have devised a multi-stage torture test worthy of the Marquis de Sade.

The plan goes something like this: Pull an 3.5L EcoBoost off the line at random; run it on a shock-test dyno for the equivalent of 150,000 miles; drop that engine into a 2011 Red Candy Metallic SuperCrew XLT 4x4; send it deep into the Oregon forests to do heavy-duty log pulling; then have it do some more 24-hour torture testing pulling a heavy load at acelebrity raceway; then take the vehicle back to Davis Dam for some more towing with a few competitors; then finally yam the engine out of the F-150 and put into a competitive desert racetruck to run the Baja 1000. And then engineers will tear it down to see what kind of wear they find. So far, the engine has performed the perfect, without a single hiccup, but the torture is far from over. In fact, it's quite easy to identify this exact engine's ID number along the way. It's prominently displayed at the front of the right cylinder head as #448AA.

When it was introduced for the 2007 model year, the Edge was like a modern Mariah Carey—big to look at, but struggling with a weight problem and the resultant effects on performance. At the Chicago auto show, Ford shows off a freshening that develops the Edge’s view, revisionthe interior, and, although not directly addressing the issue of mass, will increase performance.
Like most mid-cycle refreshes, the Edge’s 2011 update starts with a nose job. Every panel up front is new: hood, fenders, grille, and ribbon. The result is a sultrier shape than the blocky original Edge—the headlights are narrower, the three-bar grille dips deeper into the fascia, and the overall look is softened and rounded—but still clearly grandchild from it. Around back, the hatch is new, with taillights that ditch the trendy clear lenses of the original model for more timeless red ones.

Functional Changes
Underneath that new hood, the Edge will have a selection of two new engines and one updated unit. The new base engine will be a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected EcoBoost four-cylinder. Power figures have not been released yet, but figure on about 230 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque. Mid-level SEL models will get the 3.5-liter V-6 from the previous Edge, but updated with variable timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts, with output increasing 20 hp and 3 lb-ft, to 285 and 253, respectively.
Top-of-the-line Sport models, in addition to unique black grille slats, smoked head- and taillights, and black-trimmed, 22-inch wheels; get Ford’s 3.7-liter V-6, which delivers a relatively modest bump in hp—to 305—over the 3.5, but a torque gain of 27 lb-ft, for a total of 280. All three engines will be paired with six-speed automatics, with the Sport featuring standard paddle shifters that are unavailable with the other engines.

It’s What’s Inside That Counts
The Edge’s new interior is perhaps even more attractive than the sheetmetal. A sleek new center stack steals the show, housing Ford’s new MyFord and MyFord Touch vehicle-interface systems. These two are the next evolution of Ford’s Sync. MyFord will be standard on all 2011 Edges, but MyFord Touch costs extra. Both are vehicle-management systems using a small LCD screen in the gauge cluster—the fancier MyFord Touch gets two, one on either side of the speedometer—and a larger LCD screen in the center stack.
The small screens in the IP are controlled by five-way switches (up, down, left, and right arrows plus a center “select” button) on the steering-wheel lecturer, while the center is operated via touch. The left IP screen is the only one MyFord buyers get, and it displays vehicle information such as stability-control settings, a tachometer, or trip-computer information. The screen to the right of the tachometer—again, only available with MyFord Touch—is reserved for audio, phone, navigation, and climate-control info. The center screen handles the same information as the right smaller screen, with the added benefit of being accessible to the front passenger.

Call it the Kitchen Sync
All of MyFord and MyFord Touch’s functionality builds on top of the next-generation Sync features, which include easier interaction through what Ford calls “direct speech” commands. No longer does a person dial a phone number by saying “phone” then waiting for Sync to respond before saying “call Jane.” Now, the command is simply “call Jane,” and Sync makes the call. Or, if you want to find a sporting event, you can simply say “tune to Baltimore Ravens game” rather than flipping through channels looking for the game, and Sync will find it. Additionally, below the MyFord interface are capacitive-touch controls for audio and climate, and those opting for the upgraded Sony stereo are treated to a Sony-designed audio interface. Though the system does look cool, we see frustrations growing from audio controls that will not react to thickly gloved fingers.
A vehicle with features like MyFord Touch can’t get by without a healthy dose of technology elsewhere. To that end, the Edge also will receive a bunch of optional high-tech gear including keyless entry and ignition, blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The 2011 Edge will go on sale later in 2010. Pricing should remain close to today’s levels, with a base SE beginning around $28,000 and Sport models starting near $35,000.
